Connect Phoenix Hill/Mountain to Qiantang River

The international design team of ONL proposes to create a new Green City on the site of the old railroad tracks. The contours of the new green environment for sustainable modern living recall the contours of the mountains to the north. This new lush green environment is tied to the likewise green waterfront by means of two elevated green passages, providing for a shady walk from the hills to the waterfront. The ONL design team wanted to capture the atmosphere of traditional Chinese landscape paintings where in the same picture the hills are connected to the river, usually with some built structures at the foot of the hill. Site number 3 of the Hangzhou competition offers the possibility to connect the hills with the river. The park along the waterfront is expanded into the river, connected via adaptive stepping stones to the floating islands. The one mile wide profile of the Qiantang River offers great possibilities for extending the waterfront into the river by creating floating islands for recreational use.

Hills for Housing

Our master planning scheme for Site 3 of Hangzhou proposes a densely populated area that is green, spacious, pleasant and full of natural oxygen, produced by the abundance of plants, bushes and trees. First we modeled a series of artificial hills, right at the foot of the National Park, evoking the image of a miniature mountain range. Second we used the trajectories of the old railway tracks to cut slightly curved buildings out of the hill-shaped volumes. The hill-shaped buildings contain apartments, terrace houses and penthouses, while in the heart of these residential hills there are public functions to be found, such as shops, café-restaurants, medical centers, and a variety of educational spaces. All homes adjacent to the ondulating rooflines will have spacious terraces.
